Investor Protection Law
Since January 1, 2002 the Investor Protection Law came into force in Latvia. In cases where providers of investment services (credit institutions, investment management companies and investment brokerage companies) are unable to fulfill their obligations toward customers, investors are entitled to receive compensation.
Every investor is guaranteed 90 % compensation of the value of irreversibly lost financial instruments or damage caused by a non-executed investment service, but no more than 20 000 euro.
The said law provides for payments of compensation to investors in the specific cases only, provisioned by the law. For example, an investor is not entitled to receive compensation if it was impossible to execute his order because there were no corresponding offers on the regulated market to execute the specific order. Also, no compensation will be payable for losses incurred as a result of a financial instrument price drop, including cases where a financial instrument issuer went bankrupt.
